Terms to Know for Zip Lining
Published: 23/11/2009 by Zipline Directory
With all of the technical terms used, zip lining can be confusing, especially for first time riders. Studying some of the key terms before your tour will help you know a little more about what is involved and what to expect. Although this list is not exhaustive, it contains many of the key terms used in the zip line world.
Zip line: also known as a flying fox, zip wire, aerial runway, aerial ropeslide, death slide or tyrolean crossing. The zip line refers to a pulley and cable system that transports a rider from point to point.
Canopy Tour: A canopy tour differs slightly from a zip line tour. The method of using zip lines to traverse through the air is the same, but canopy tours take place high in the forests on top of the canopy created by the trees.
Harness: This piece of equipment is one of the most important on a zip line tour. The harness attaches you by a trolley that will transport you down the zip line.
Chair Harness: This type of harness is more comfortable than a standard chest harness. The chair harness allows riders to maintain a seated position.
Trolley: The trolley is the equipment that allows you to fly down the zip line. The trolley attaches to the harness and the cable.
Suspension Bridge: One element found in many zip line courses. This bridge is suspended in the air and is typically used to transport riders from zip line to zip line.
Burma Bridge: This zip line course element appears on many tours. The Burma Bridge is a rope bridge that consists of three ropes: one that you walk on and two others for support.
Handbraking: One method of stopping yourself on a zip line. This technique involves the rider applying pressure to the zip line to control speed and come to a stop.
Mechanical Brakes: This braking system does not require riders to stop themselves. The system is designed to stop automatically when the rider reaches the landing platform.
Dual Zip Line: This zip line attraction has two zip lines set up parallel to one another.
Eco Tour: An ecological tour focuses the natural flora, fauna, and ecological aspects of the area. This tour typically combines zip lining with informational lectures on the area.
